The 2024 GMC Terrain is a small SUV with rugged exterior styling, but also ideally suited to the roads and highways in and around Stanleytown, Rocky Mount, and Greensboro. The Terrain has compact proportions that make it perfect for the town or city. Still, it also has the style, capability, comfort, and safety that make every journey a pleasure for the driver and passengers. At the entry-level, the Terrain delivers great style at an affordable price, while top-of-the-range models are comfortable, luxurious, and packed with the latest features.
There are four trim levels in the 2024 GMC Terrain lineup and plenty of ways to configure them to suit your style. The exterior is ruggedly upscale, with different models featuring unique grille designs that set each one apart from the rest of the lineup. The interior follows a similar recipe blending ruggedly oversized controls and blocky shapes with high-quality materials.
The range starts with the SLE and SLT trim levels, which are standard front-wheel drive models with all-wheel drive available. The third model in the range is the AT4 offering a degree of off-road exterior styling and front skid plates, and the lineup reaches its impressive pinnacle with the sensational Terrain Denali. Denali is a name people now associate with luxury, and the Denali version of the GMC’s most affordable SUV more than lives up to its auspicious reputation. AT4 and Denali models are exclusively AWD.
Even though AWD is standard or available for every model and the AT4 adds a big helping of off-road style to the lineup, the Terrain is at its best in the urban jungle. The torquey turbo-four engine delivers a great combination of appropriate performance and desirable fuel economy. The 1.5-liter turbo-four engine is new this year and develops 170 horsepower and 203 lb.-ft. of torque, five horsepower more than the Terrain’s previous powerplant.
The same engine powers all versions of the 2024 GMC Terrain, and the power gets sent to the front or all four wheels through an excellent nine-speed automatic transmission. There’s almost no difference in fuel economy between front- and all-wheel drive models. Front drive models get you EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of 24 mpg in the city, 29 mpg on the highway, and 26 mpg combined. The only difference with AWD is a one mpg drop in the highway economy to 28 mpg.
There isn’t any such thing as a basic or fleet model in the Terrain lineup. Even the entry-level SLE gets a standard specification that most shoppers would concede has far more than just the basics. The AT4 has only a slightly higher starting MSRP than the SLT, making it a tempting option for many. The price gap to the Denali is more significant than it is between the SLT and AT4, but the enhanced specification easily justifies what is still a relatively modest uplift.
As well as the four excellent trim levels, the 2024 GMC Terrain has a long list of upgrade packages available. For example, the Elevation Package for SLE and SLT trim levels includes 19-inch Gloss Black alloy wheels, Black GMC center caps with red GMC lettering, a darkened front grille and Black roof side rails, mirror caps, model and trim exterior badging, and exterior accents.
