The E-Ray brings electrification to this iconic sports car for the first time, but perhaps not in the way you might imagine. And if you think electrification might dilute that old Corvette magic, prepare to think again!
If an automaker adds an “E” in a vehicle’s name these days, it’s a decent bet that it’s a version of that vehicle with a fully electric powertrain. In the case of the 2024 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray, the E does signify electrification, but the E-Ray isn’t an EV. The Corvette E-Ray is a hybrid, but this is a hybrid like few others. While the hybrids we’re used to seeing these days are all about fuel economy with scant regard for performance, the E-Ray is all about performance. If automakers built more hybrids with performance in mind, most vehicles on the road today would likely be hybrid. The incredible 2024 Corvette E-Ray pairs a 6.2-liter LT2 Small Block V-8 gas engine with an electric motor on the front axle and a 1.9 kWh battery mounted between the seats. The V-8 brings 495 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque to the party, and the electric motor weighs in with an extra 160 horsepower. The gas engine provides propulsion to the rear wheels in true Corvette style, while the electric motor powers the front wheels to create the first-ever AWD Corvette. The result is a combined 655 horsepower and a 0 to 60 mph time of 2.5 seconds. Yes, that’s correct. The E-Ray can reach 60 mph from a standing start in 2.5 seconds.
The E-Ray battery recharges itself using regenerative energy from coasting, braking, and during everyday driving, so there’s no need to plug it in. The car’s advanced technology means the driver doesn’t have to worry about what’s going on with the hybrid system, as the amount of electric assist gets managed by six driver-selectable modes: Tour, Sport, Track, Weather, My Mode, and Z-Mode. A Charge+ feature is also available to the driver to maximize the battery’s charge state.
As well as the outrageous power and performance, the E-Ray also has its “sensible” side. Standard features include Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Alert, and Automatic Emergency Braking for safety. The car also has standard Magnetic Ride Control 4.0 with three distinct suspension settings, a Brembo Carbon Ceramic braking system for optimal braking performance, and an Active Fuel Management system that utilizes the electric motor to extend four-cylinder operation in various driving conditions.
