New standards are set

If you wanted close to full-size capability from a midsize pickup truck in Stanleytown, Danville, Rocky Mount, or Greensboro, the GMC Canyon was already a natural choice. However, with the arrival of the 2024 GMC Canyon, a new standard is being set in the midsize truck segment. Along with looking amazing and delivering towing and hauling capability that full-size trucks would have been proud of not too long ago, the 2024 Canyon also emphasizes off-road capability more than ever.

Midsize truck with a compact lineup

What sets a truck like the 2024 GMC Canyon apart from full-size models is its smaller size, greater maneuverability, and better fuel economy. But another break from the full-size norm is a much more truncated lineup that offers the kind of models shoppers want without confusing them with an almost infinite list of options that few buyers want or need.

There are four trim levels to choose between: Elevation, AT4, Denali, AT4X, and the range-topping AT4X. All four use the same powerplant and transmission, and the only body style available is a crew cab with a 5-foot-2 bed. It makes total sense for that to be the only basic configuration, as that’s the configuration that consistently accounts for the vast majority of sales. New for 2024 is an AEV version of the AT4X, which features 17-inch AEV wheels, 35-inch Goodyear mud-terrain tires, heavy-duty skid plates, and AEV steel bumpers. The AEV is also 1.5 inches taller than a conventional AT4X for those wanting an off-road vehicle that’s even more capable without sacrificing convenience and comfort features like a remote start, heated front seats, or an 11.3-inch infotainment system.

New 2024 GMC Canyon powertrains and performance

It’s hard to imagine many people not being impressed with what they see when a brand-new GMC Canyon is in front of them. As well as being a little bigger than previous generations with a longer wheelbase, the latest Canyon is also a little taller with a factory lift that gives extra ground clearance to aid its impressive off-road credentials. Most models benefit from a 2.0-inch factory lift that helps deliver 9.6 inches of ground clearance, but the standard AT4X gets a 3.0-inch lift and 10.7-inch ground clearance.

Elevation models are rear-drive with four-wheel-drive available, but the rest of the lineup is standard four-wheel-drive. A limited-slip rear differential is standard with the AT4, while the AT4X takes off-roading even more seriously with standard front and rear lockers and Multimatic internal bypass shock absorbers.

Peak performance powertrain

The GM sibling of the Canyon offers three different tunings of the engine that powers both models, but the GMC keeps it nice and simple by dropping the most powerful High Output version in all Canyon models. The 2.7-liter turbo-four features Active Fuel Management and Stop/Start technology, and the output is a very healthy 310 horsepower and 430 lb/.-ft. of torque. The power goes to the front or all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission that shifts quicker than the previous generation.

Of course, even though it’s midsize, the Canyon is still a pickup truck, and towing is one of the primary jobs of any pickup truck. It’s an area where shoppers traditionally accept they have to compromise to have a smaller footprint than a full-size, but it’s another area where the Canyon excels. The AT4X can handle 6,000 pounds, but the Elevation, AT4, and Denali offer a best-in-class 7,700-pound maximum towing capacity.
