To be a contender in the American truck market, a full-size light-duty pickup simply has to be extremely versatile, flexible, capable, and tough. The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Limited definitely checks all those boxes, but it also goes further down the route of style, presence, comfort, and luxury than many of its rivals. If you need a new truck but you also want a greater level of style, presence, and sophistication for going about your business in Stanleytown, Danville, Rocky Mount, and Greensboro than the majority of the usual suspects provide, you really should check out the Sierra 1500 Limited.
There are no fewer than six different trim levels to choose from in the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Limited lineup, and the entry-level version has been renamed. The most affordable version is now called the Sierra Pro, and from there the range now goes to the SLE, Elevation, SLT, and AT4 until the lineup reaches its stunning peak with the fabulously opulent Denali. All versions of the Sierra 1500 Limited, except the AT4, are rear-wheel-drive in their standard form with four-wheel-drive available, while the AT4 is the only model in the range that gets four-wheel-drive as part of its standard specification.
Another change to the Sierra 1500 Limited for the 2022 model year is a realignment of the engines. Buyers now have four very clear and distinct choices, and the standard engine is now the 2.7-liter turbo-four that used to be an upgrade for the most affordable versions of the truck. That base turbo-four produces an impressive 310 horsepower and 348 lb.-ft. of torque, and it’s the standard powerplant under the hood of Pro, SLE, and Elevation trim levels. If a more traditional V-8 is what you’re looking for then GMC is happy to oblige with the next engine in the range which is a 5.3-liter V-8 that develops 355 horsepower and 383 lb.-ft. of torque. The 5.3 is available for Pro, SLE, and Elevation trims and standard with the SLT and Denali.
The most powerful unit is available for the SLT and Denali trims, and it’s a 6.2-liter V-8 that provides the Sierra with 420 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque. The fourth and final engine option is a 3.0-liter inline-six turbodiesel that has 277 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque to offer, which is now standard with the AT4 and available for all other trims apart from the entry-level Sierra Pro. Depending on the engine chosen, the power goes to the rear or all four wheels through either an eight or a ten-speed automatic transmission.
As well as the base engine going up a notch this year, the standard air conditioning unit has also been promoted to a more sophisticated climate-control system, even for the base Sierra Pro. You can rightly expect the top-spec Denali models to be positively bursting with style, opulence, and fabulous levels of standard equipment, but equipment levels are good across the range and even the Denali can be significantly upgraded if you choose to raid the options list.
Another exercise in renaming has been carried out for 2022 with Denali Reserve Package now available that used to be called Denali Ultimate. If you choose to add this package to your new Denali you’ll then be getting power steps, a power sunroof, a rear camera mirror, and adaptive cruise control on top of Denali’s already stellar list of standard equipment. Practicality is also incredibly well taken care of too with features such as the world-first six-function Multi-Pro Tailgate and the industry-first use of a hardwearing carbon-fibre composite for the truck beds.
The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Limited can more than hold its own in any half-ton truck company in terms of capability, power, performance, and flexibility, but it also has a presence and style that sets it apart from the crowd.
