Sometimes a manufacturer just gets it exactly right with a product and that certainly appears to be the case with Chevrolet and its refreshed 2022 Equinox. The 2022 Chevrolet Equinox is a refreshed version of the compact crossover SUV’s third-generation, and the relatively minor enhancements for the new model year have actually given the Chevy Equinox quite a lift. As well as the refreshed exterior styling that has notably updated the front fascia, the old entry-level L trim level and one of the engines have been dropped for this year, but a new RS trim level has been added.
Buyers have four different Equinox trim levels to choose from again this year, but the entry-level model is no longer the L and there’s a new RS trim level added higher up in the range. This means the entry-level Equinox trim level is now the LS, and from there the range now goes to the LT, RS, and finally to the top-of-the-range Premier. Every one of the four available versions of the 2022 Chevrolet Equinox comes standard front-wheel-drive, but all four trims levels can also be upgraded to include the extra capability of all-wheel-drive if you want it and you’re prepared to pay a little extra to have it.
Every 2022 Chevrolet Equinox now comes equipped with the same 1.5-liter turbo-four engine that delivers a welcome balance of performance, capability and fuel economy. The engine puts out 170 horsepower and 203 lb.-ft. of torque which then gets sent to the front or all four wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission with overdrive and Driver Shift Control. Front-drive versions of the Equinox are inevitably the most frugal with EPA fuel economy ratings of 26 mpg in the city, 31 mpg on the highway, and 28 mpg combined, while the extra capability of AWD only reduces those numbers a little to 25 mpg in the city, 30 mpg on the highway and 27 mpg combined.
The Chevy Equinox is big on value and safety. The NHTSA gives it a five-star rating for overall safety while the IIHS names it a Top Safety Pick, with all versions getting standard automatic emergency braking, active lane control, and automatic high-beam headlights, while higher-specification models go further with standard blind-spot monitors, parking sensors, and a surround-view camera system.
With the LS now being the entry-level version of the Equinox, the base model’s list of standard equipment is now even more impressive. Standard equipment includes a full set of power features, 17-inch alloy wheels, a six-speaker audio system, active noise cancellation, cruise control, keyless open and start, a rear vision camera, climate control, and an infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
The 2022 Chevrolet Equinox is one of those vehicles that’s knows exactly what it is and what it needs to be and doesn’t try to be something it isn’t. This is a stylish, modern, well-equipped, and comfortable compact crossover SUV that also offers impressive safety and superb value for money.
