The 2022 Buick Encore GX is a subcompact crossover SUV that offers modern SUV styling, impressive safety credentials, a surprisingly spacious and comfortable interior, and turbocharged engines that are perfect for the urban jungle. The Encore GX is sensational for the streets of Stanleytown, Danville and Rocky Mount, but it’s also a great little vehicle for longer trips to Greensboro or further afield.
There are three different trim levels in the Buick Encore GX lineup, or five if you are one of those who think a different drivetrain is enough to justify classifying a vehicle as a different trim level. The front-wheel-drive versions of the subcompact Buick crossover SUV are available in the entry-level Select trim level and a higher-spec Encore GX Essence. However, the entry-level model if all-wheel-drive is your preferred option is the Preferred, the mid-range AWD version is the Select, and the range-topping version is the essence.
On the Buick website, it looks as though the same engine is used for all versions of the 2022 Encore GX, but that’s not quite right. A small-displacement turbocharged three-cylinder unit is found under the hood of all versions of the Encore GX, but there are two versions of it. The engine you get with the front-drive select trim level is a 1.2-liter turbo-three that develops 137 horsepower, but every other Encore GX gets a more powerful 1.3-liter turbo-three that puts out 155 horsepower and 174 lb.-ft. of torque. Front-drive models come with a standard continuously variable transmission (CVT), but AWD versions of the subcompact Buick get a nine-speed automatic.
A front-drive Encore GX with that efficient CVT transmission offers an EPA-rated fuel economy of 29 mpg in the city, 31 mpg on the highway and 30 mpg combined. Go for the additional capability of all-wheel-drive, and those numbers do reduce by a little to 26 mpg in the city, 29 mpg on the highway and 27 mpg combined.
Even the most affordable versions of the Encore GX put a big focus on safety with standard LED headlights, automatic high beams and active lane control, but can also have big-car features such as automatic park assist, a rear camera mirror, a surround-view camera system, adaptive cruise control, and front and rear parking sensors for some models if safety is a big concern and you’re happy to pay more.
Even the entry-level Encore GX Select (FWD) comes with standard 18-inch alloys, keyless start, seats that are a combination of cloth and synthetic leather, a full complement of power features, dual-zone automatic climate control, and an 8.0-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This entry-level model is an attractive proposition that can be further enhanced by raiding the extensive list of options, so you don’t necessarily have to go as far as a higher trim if there are only a few things you want extra that are not standard.
A lot of small crossover SUVs try to give the impression they’re something they’re not, but the 2022 Buick Encore GX is an honest little SUV that concentrates on doing what it’s designed to do as well and as comfortably as possible, and even AWD versions don’t try to make you believe they’re some sort of hardcore off-roader. The 2022 Encore GX is a genuinely desirable premium crossover, and you’ll soon realize that when you come for a test drive with GR Chevrolet Buick GMC here at 930 Fairystone Park Hwy, Stanleytown, VA..
