The full-size, light-duty pickup segment is fiercely competitive, and the Chevy Silverado 1500 is undoubtedly one of the segment’s biggest hitters. This year, Chevy has decided it’s time for a midcycle refresh for the Silverado, so it benefits from a lightly refreshed exterior, revisions to the available engines, and the addition of an all-new off-road-focused ZR2 trim level, massive 13.4-inch infotainment touchscreens, and a 12-inch digital driver information center. Buyers now also have the option of GM’s cutting-edge Super Cruise system, so there has never been a better time to place a factory order for a new 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500.
The familiar trim levels stay in place this year, so the Silverado can still be anything you want, from an affordable work truck to a luxurious mobile office or anything you want it to be in between. The exciting news here is that there’s a new addition to the family in the shape of a new ZR2 version of the Silverado 1500. This is the first time a ZR2 trim has been offered for the Silverado, and its package of exterior and chassis enhancements that include Multimatic DSSV shock absorbers all work to improve the off-road performance and capability of what was already an incredibly capable truck.
The 2022 trim level lineup still begins with the entry-level WT (Work Truck), but the rest of the range now goes to Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, LTX, ZR2, and finally to the fabulously well-equipped, range-topping High Country.
The V-6 engine that used to be the entry-level unit in the Silverado 1500 lineup has now been dropped entirely, but that’s great news for budget-conscious buyers as it now means the 2.7-liter turbo-four that used to be optional at lower trim levels is now the standard powerplant. The turbo-four is certainly no lightweight either, as it now develops 310 horsepower and a massive 420 lb.-ft. of torque that is 62 lb.-ft. more than this unit produced last year.
There’s still the option of a 5.3-litre V-8 that develops 355 horsepower and 383 lb.-ft. of torque, if you want a more powerful V-8 engine, it now comes mated exclusively to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Next is the range-topping 6.2-liter V-8, which puts 420 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. and four-wheel drive at the Chevy’s disposal, allowing you to tow up to a massive 13,300 pounds. The 3.0-litre inline-six turbodiesel is still an option, but due to clever chassis upgrades and a larger rear differential, it’s now rated to tow as much as the 6.2-liter V-8.
You’ll notice even more advanced features that are both standard and available across the Silverado lineup this year, such as the entry-level WT getting a welcome upgrade from manual air-conditioning to a more advanced climate control system. The LT, RST, LTZ, LT Trail Boss, ZR2, and High Country models also now feature a huge 13.4-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system, they all get additional standard safety features, and GM’s incredible Super Cruise limited hands-free driver-assist system is now available as an option for the top-of-the-range High Country version of the Silverado.
There’s an almost unlimited number of ways to configure a 2022 Silverado 1500 that encourage you to build one into your ideal truck to successfully tackle just about any light-duty application you can think of. The best way to get exactly the truck you want and need is to place a factory, especially as that means you’ll be getting all the features you want without necessarily having to pay for things you might not want or need.
The Silverado 1500 was already a leader in the hugely competitive full-size, light-duty pickup segment, but the enhancements and upgrades Chevy has ushered in for the 2022 model year have transported the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 to even higher levels of capability and desirability.
