The Terrain is in an extremely competitive area of the market so it has to be good to get noticed, and it is. This current second-generation of the Terrain has gone in a sleek, sporty and somewhat smooth direction compared to many of its rivals and looks every bit as contemporary today as it did when it was first unveiled.
At the entry level of the current lineup, the 2021 GMC Terrain can represent excellent value for money but it can also be an extremely opulent and high-spec model if you choose to go in the other direction with the sensational Denali models.
There are four trim levels in the 2021 GMC Terrain family but there’s also the Elevation Edition package that adds a blacked-out look to the Terrain that can deliver a model that could be mistaken for an extra trim level. The lineup still consists of the entry-level SL as well as the SLE, SLT and the range-topping Denali.
The Elevation Edition is a package that can be added to the SLE or SLT trim levels to enhance their aesthetic appeal. The package includes 19-inch Gloss-Black alloy wheels, a darkened front grille, black mirror caps and roof rails, black exterior accents and black trim badging. It’s not just available in black, however, as you can have an SLE or SLT Elevation Package with Ebony Twilight Metallic, Summit White, Graphite Gray Metallic, Satin Steel Metallic and Quicksilver Metallic exterior colors.
The engines under the hood of the 2021 GMC Terrain are every bit as modern as the exterior styling of this compact crossover. A turbodiesel is no longer offered, but what we do have is a turbocharged four-cylinder unit that checks most of the boxes for a vehicle like the Terrain.
A 1.5-liter turbo-four is the standard powerplant and it puts out a pretty healthy 170 horsepower and 203 lb.-ft. of torque. It’s perfect for driving around the town or city and that turbo power comes in handy when you’re traveling south along the 220 to Greensboro, or north through Roanoke to the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests.
The power produced by the turbo-four is sent to the front wheels in standard form through a nine-speed automatic transmission, but if you’d like the additional capability of all-wheel-drive you can have it with any trim level. AWD doesn’t turn the Terrain into an expedition vehicle for conquering the most challenging trails in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains but you’ll certainly feel the benefit when the snow and ice of a Virginia winter take hold of the roads around Stanleytown.
This might be a relatively small SUV in terms of overall size but it’s pretty big when it comes to the standard features and equipment you get for your money with a new 2021 GMC Terrain. This is one of those vehicles where the entry-level model really is worth considering because it looks like pretty sensational value.
The Terrain SL comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, cloth seats, active noise cancellation, automatic on/off headlights, keyless ignition, a rearview camera, Bluetooth connectivity, two USB charging ports, and a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility and 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot capability.
SLE models are quite similar to the SL as far as standard equipment goes, but the SLE does unlock quite a few upgrade options such as a larger 8.0-inch touchscreen and remote start. The SLT starts to resemble a luxury model with standard kit that includes dual-zone climate control, leather upholstery, 18-inch alloys, heated front seats and that a larger 8.0-inch touchscreen. But for real luxury the Terrain Denali gets you 19-inch wheels, premium leather upholstery, LED headlights, parking sensors, a heated steering wheel, satellite navigation and plenty more.
If you’re in the market for a compact five-seat crossover SUV that doesn’t compromise on style, performance or comfort and also comes with a raft of the latest features to keep you safe such as automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitors, check out the 2021 GMC Terrain.
