Even though the excellent fourth-generation of the Chevrolet Tahoe had only been in production since the 2015 model year, this all-new fifth-generation arrives for the 2021 model year to make this superb truck-based SUV more contemporary and even more capable.
If a large crossover won’t give you the strength and capability you require, a traditional ladder-frame SUV like the mighty Chevy Tahoe comes into its own. This latest incarnation of the Tahoe is now bigger, better, and boasts much more cutting-edge styling than the model it replaces, which is some serious billing to live up to.
The Tahoe can accommodate as many as nine people and plenty of cargo in some configurations, and it delivers the kind of maximum towing capacity a crossover can only dream of. When you take all that into consideration, it really is tough to come up with a family task the all-new 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe isn’t ready for.
You could have been worried that Chevy could have relented and converted the Tahoe into a car-like crossover when you first see this all-new version, and that’s because it looks every bit as modern as any crossover out there. It may still share a platform and plenty of components with the awesome Silverado 1500 pickup truck, but this fifth-gen Tahoe appears to take more of its styling inspiration from the new Chevy Blazer, especially at the front.
Meanwhile, the side profile of the 2021 Tahoe is still immediately recognizable as the successor to the previous model, but a touch of relatively subtle restyling has smoothed out a few square edges to deliver a sleeker and more contemporary look that can’t have done any harm to the aerodynamics of this fantastically big and capable SUV.
Some all-new vehicle models have launched recently with just a couple of different trim levels for buyers to select from before additional models and special editions arrive later on in the lifecycle of the vehicle. In this case, though, Chevy has come out of the blocks with four distinctly different 2021 Tahoe trim levels for the launch of the new model here in Canada.
The most affordable, entry-level Tahoe variant and the only one in the lineup to go for if you absolutely must have a two-wheel-drive, is the Tahoe LT. This base model can, of course, be upgraded to four-wheel-drive if you prefer, but the main reason for choosing this one in most cases would be if you want or need a rear-wheel-drive SUV rather than a four-wheel-drive model.
The rest of the range consists of the Z71, Premier and top-of-the-range High Country, all of which are standard all-wheel drive.
This fifth-generation 2021 Chevy Tahoe is available with two different engine choices. The base engine found in the LT, Z71 and the Premier versions of the Tahoe is GM’s tried and trusted 5.3-litre gas V-8 that gives the full-size SUV a very capable 355 horsepower and 383 lb.-ft. of torque to play with, which goes to the rear or all four wheels through a new 10-speed automatic transmission that’s standard in all versions of the new Tahoe and brings the Chevy right up to date.
If you want the more powerful engine option that’s available for the 2021 model year Tahoe, you’ll find it’s reserved for the top-of-the-range Tahoe High Country and isn’t an option for other trim levels. It certainly helps make a good case for the High Country trim level though, and that’s because this mighty 6.2-litre gas V-8 pumps out 420 horsepower and a very useful 460 lb.-ft.
When it comes to the serious business of towing, the maximum tow rating for the 2021 Tahoe comes in at 8,400 pounds (3,810kg) when properly configured.
Chevrolet already had proven winning formula on its hands with the previous Tahoe, but in the face of increasing competition from here and abroad, the automaker decided to go all in and make it even bigger and even better than it already was. Inside there’s more room than ever for passengers and cargo, and with 34 inches of legroom in the third row, the seats back there are now perfectly suitable for adults, even on a relatively long journey.
