Everyone knows pickup trucks like the Silverado 1500 are the best vehicles out there for towing and hauling, but these remarkably capable and versatile vehicles are no longer just for the workplace. The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 does what trucks do as well as or better than any out there, but it can also make a sensationally flexible alternative to a sedan, wagon or SUV.
A 2021 Silverado 1500 can be specified and configured in an almost unimaginable number of different ways to suit a huge number of different applications. This is a vehicle that’s just as good for towing and hauling for work up and down Fairystone Park Highway all day as it is for taking the family into the great outdoors for a weekend camping adventure.
There are still a bewildering number of ways you can configure a 2021 Silverado 1500 even though the trim levels remain the same this year, but there are lots of changes to those trim levels and the available upgrade packages that make it even easier to get exactly the truck you need and want.
The base Silverado 1500 model is therefore once again the appropriately Work Truck (WT), and from there we have the Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST, LTZ, LT Trail Boss the High Country to finish off this expansive family of pickup trucks. Don’t forget though, you also have to choose between Regular, Extended and Crew Cab body styles, standard, short and long beds and rear and four-wheel-drive.
As well as rear and all-wheel-drivelines, there are five superb engines to choose from too in the 2021 Silverado 1500 family. Up first is the base 4.3-liter V-6 which develops a useful 285 horsepower and 305 lb.-ft. of torque, but then we have what’s sure to prove a popular option in the shape of a 2.7-liter turbo-four. A four-pot might sound a little diminutive for a full-size truck, but that’s before you learn it puts out a seriously capable 210 horsepower and 348 lb.-ft. of torque, which means it allows the Chevy to tow up to as much as 9,600 pounds.
Most truck buyers still love a good old V-8 though, and the first one we have here is a 5.3-liter V-8 engine that produces 355 horsepower and 383 lb.-ft. of torque. That then leads us to the most powerful engine available for the 2021 Silverado 1500, and it’s the awesome 6.2-liter V-8 which gives the Silverado 420 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque to play with. However, if fuel economy is a concern with an engine like that, you might want to consider the 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbodiesel that may only produce 277 horsepower, but is an equal of that big V-8 with a massive 460 lb.-ft. of tow-friendly torque available.
The 2021 Silverado 1500 is available with 6-, 8- or 10-speed automatic transmissions, but which ones are available to you depends on the engine and driveline you’ve gone for.
The days of a single bench seat, wind-down windows and no radio are a thing of the distant past as even the entry-level Silverado 1500 WT comes standard with a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth phone connectivity and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.
The Silverado 1500 LT is probably a great starting point in the range for retail buyers as you get a bit of chrome exterior trim, LED headlights, a bigger 8.0-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system, Wi-Fi hotspot capability and a lot of available options for upgrading your truck to suit your requirements. And don’t forget, the LT also gets you that excellent 2.7-liter turbo-4 engine.
LTZ models come with the 5.3-litre gas V-8 engine as well as an external engine cooler, an integrated trailer brake, an advanced trailering system and a couple of 120-volt power outlets. Inside the LTZ you’ll find 10-way power-adjustable heated front seats, leather-trimmed upholstery, a heated steering wheel, no less than six USB ports, a high-definition rearview camera, keyless entry and start, remote start, wireless device charging capability and more. That’s a decent upgrade on the LT model and it won’t break the bank to upgrade from there to here.
High Country models really do push the boat out, both figuratively and literally. The top-of-the-range trim includes a power-up and -down tailgate, LED headlights, 20-inch alloys, an advanced trailering package, an 8.0-inch digital instrument cluster, an upscale Bose audio system, a navigation system, heated outboard leather rear seats, ventilated front seats, a powered rear window and more.
A sizeable book could be written about just how capable, versatile and flexible the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is and all the many, many ways there are to configure it to suit your exact requirements.
