This third-generation of the Chevrolet Equinox arrived a couple of years ago it moved from being a midsize crossover SUV into the compact segment, but the size reduction wasn’t all that great so the popular Chevy still offers the kind of interior space and comfort you’d expect from a mid-size SUV.
As well as plenty of room inside for up to five people and their cargo, the Equinox also delivers a good amount of standard active safety features, an excellent infotainment system and all-round great value for money. You can take a trip in the equinox with a full complement of people to Mountainview Plaza Shopping Center without worrying about buying too much stuff to fit in it on the journey home without leaving someone behind to make room.
You currently have four different versions of the 2021 Chevrolet Equinox to choose from, most of which are available in both front and all-wheel-drive variants. The entry-level model in the range is the Equinox L, and from there the lineup goes to the LS, LT and finally to the top-of-the-range Premier trim level. On the Chevy website, it can look as though there are six trim levels, but that’s because they list the LT and Premier models with the more powerful engine separate from those with the base engine.
All four trim levels are front-drive in their standard form, but all-wheel-drive is available for the three higher trims. If you want an entry-level Equinox L model you won’t be able to upgrade to all-wheel-drive, but you’ll still have a great value crossover that’s more than capable of taking you and the family for a weekend adventure in Fairy Stone State Park.
The standard engine for all four trim levels in the 2021 Chevrolet Equinox family is a 1.5-liter turbo-four producing 170 horsepower and 203 lb.-ft. of torque, which sends its power to the front or all four wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission. It’s a more-than-capable unit that budget-conscious buyers can be totally happy with, but there is a more powerful alternative a lot of buyers will probably want to go for.
It’s only available if you go for one of the two top trim levels, but the alternative engine is well worth considering if your budget will run to it. The unit in question is a 2.0-liter which then gives the Chevy 252 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque to play with, and this one comes mated to a standard nine-speed automatic instead of the six-speed the smaller engine makes use of.
With the 1.5-liter engine and front-wheel-drive, the Equinox is rated at 26 mpg in the city, 31 mpg on the highway and 28 mpg combined, while all-wheel-drive sees those numbers reduce slightly to 25/30/27 mpg respectively. Front-drive models with the 2.0-liter engine are rated at 22/29/25 mpg, while all-wheel-drive versions can get you 22/28/24 mpg.
If you’re sick and tired of being enticed by manufacturers to look at keenly priced base models only to be disappointed by what they actually offer for the money, you’ll love what you find with the 2021 Chevy Equinox. In this particular case, the entry-level model might actually be the sweet spot for value in the 2021 lineup.
Standard features you get with the Equinox L include active noise cancellation, a six-speaker audio system, Bluetooth phone connectivity and audio streaming, keyless open and start, full power features, climate control, a rear vision camera, and the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 System with a 7.0-inch diagonal color touchscreen and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The base model also has 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot capability and there’s a generous amount of standard safety features.
Standard safety features with the entry-level Equinox include Chevy Safety Assist, automatic emergency braking, automatic high-beam headlights, forward collision alert and active lane control. Of course, higher trim levels are even more generously equipped, but the entry model really does represent sensational value for money.
Even in its most expensive trim levels the 2021 Chevrolet Equinox represents sensational value for money, but you still get fantastic value, lots of space, plenty of standard kit and a stylish exterior whichever version of the Equinox you go for.
