The 2021 Chevrolet Blazer is the very epitome of a modern crossover SUV. A carlike, unibody platform meets incredibly modern and aggressive exterior styling to deliver a midsize crossover SUV that will turn heads in any situation. There’s far more to recommend the new Chevrolet Blazer than just stunning looks, however, so forget about Blazers of the past and take a look at this stunning new take on a familiar name.
The 2021 Chevrolet Blazer comes in six or ten different trim levels, depending on whether you consider an all-wheel-drive version of a model as a separate trim level in its own right. The six main trim levels start off with the entry-level Blazer L and then go to the 1LT, 2LT, 3LT, RS and range-topping Premier. All those trims are standard front-wheel-drive, but 2LT, 3LT, RS and Premier trims can all be upgraded to all-wheel-drive if you prefer, so the base L and the 1LT are only available as front-drive models.
You have three different powertrains to choose from to go under the hood of your 2021 Blazer, and each of them deserves serious consideration. The base engine in L and 1LT trims is a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder gas unit producing 193 horsepower and 188 lb.-ft. of torque, which is sent to the wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission that features in every version of the Blazer. Step up to a 2LT and the standard engine then becomes a very contemporary 2.0-liter turbo-four which then gives the Blazer 227 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque to play with. This engine is also found in the 3LT and the Blazer Premier, but RS variants get a third engine option you might want to consider that’s also available as an option for the Premier trim level.
RS models are equipped as standard with a traditional 3.6-liter V-6 engine and this one develops 308 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque. This unit needs careful consideration and whether this powerplant is right for you depends on what you want your Blazer to do. It might have more power than the turbo-four, but it doesn’t feel massively faster than the turbo-four.
Most Blazers are only rated to tow a maximum of 1,500 pounds but if you have and Blazer RS or Premier with the V-6 and all-wheel-drive, however, that maximum tow rating then increases considerably to 4,500 pounds.
Four-cylinder Blazers get a relatively simple AWD system that disconnects the rear wheels until the fronts spin and then engages them to shift half the power to the rear. AWD Blazers with the V-6 utilize a more sophisticated twin-clutch rear differential, which is then capable of moving torque across the rear axle to improve traction and handling.
If the most high-tech safety features are high on your list of priorities for your new ride you might want to look higher than the entry-level Blazer L, but otherwise, the base model makes a tempting case for itself. Standard features include 18-inch alloy wheels, a six-speaker audio system, active noise cancellation, dual-zone climate control, an HD rearview camera, and an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that’s Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible and also features 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot capability.
A Blazer 3LT might represent the best value for a lot of buyers because it gets the turbo-four engine, blind-spot monitors, a power tailgate, a power front passenger seat, heated front seats and leather upholstery all as part of its standard equipment.
At the top of the trim levels, the RS gets you things like satellite navigation, a heated steering wheel, remote start, a power tailgate, and 20-inch alloy wheels, while the Premier piles on the comfort and luxury with heated rear seats, cooled front seats, a power tilt/telescope steering wheel and a premium Bose audio system.
The 2021 Chevrolet Blazer is a stunning-looking midsize crossover SUV that will draw admiring glances wherever you go and whatever trim level you choose. Those head-turning looks are then complemented by a choice of powertrains that help the package more than live up to the promises made by the styling.
