The Buick Encore is available in two different variants for the 2021 model year to provide even more choice for buyers. Along with the standard 2021 Buick Encore that we’re already fairly familiar with, there’s also a new Buick Encore GX available. Both variants ate compact, nippy and fun-to-drive crossovers perfect suited to the urban conditions of towns and cities like Bassett, Ridgeway, Danby and elsewhere. However, the Buick is also great for the highway and trips into the great outdoors away from the hustle and bustle of the daily commute.
With the new Encore GX now on the scene as well as the original Encore, the 2021 Encore lineup has been reduced to just two trim levels. These two are the base Encore and the Preferred, but while base Encore models are exclusively front-wheel-drive, the Preferred trim level is available in both front and all-wheel-drive variants.
The new Encore GX offers quite a bit more choice for buyers with three trim levels for 2021, which start off with Preferred as the entry-level model and then go to the mid-range Select and the top-of-the-range Essence. All three trims are standard front-wheel-drive with all-wheel-drive available throughout the range.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the 2021 Encore uses the same engine for both trim levels. The engine Buick has gone with is a lively 1.4-litre turbo-four producing 138 horsepower and 148 lb.-ft. of torque, which goes to your choice of the front or all four wheels through a standard six-speed automatic transmission.
Encore GX models have two engines in their current lineup, but the 1.4 found in the regular Encore isn’t one of them. The first Encore GX engine is a 1.2-litre turbo-three that puts out 137 horsepower and 162 lb.-ft. of torque that goes exclusively to the front wheels through a continuously variable transmission (CVT) transmission.
If you want the extra capability of all-wheel-drive for your Encore GX you’ll have to choose the more powerful 1.3-litre turbo-three engine instead. This one provides the Encore GX with 155 horsepower and 174 lb.-ft. of torque, powering all four wheels through a standard nine-speed automatic transmission.
Base Buick Encore models feature standard 18-inch alloys, signature LED daytime running lamps, an impressive 10 airbags, six-way power driver’s seat, air conditioning and the excellent Buick Infotainment System. The infotainment system features an 8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth phone connectivity and audio streaming, 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot capability, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, and auxiliary jack socket and even Siri EyesFree and Natural Voice Recognition for radio and phone.
Encore GX Preferred models get a similar set of standard features as the regular Encore Preferred, but the GX Preferred also gets the Buick Driver Confidence package. The BDC package is a collection of advanced safety features such as Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian Braking, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Alert, Following Distance Indicator and IntelliBeam headlamps with auto high beam.
Select models add the likes of a 10-way power driver’s seat, an enhanced audio system, a rear armrest, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, rear cross-traffic alert, remote start and roof-mounted side rails. If you’d like to go all the way to including leather upholstery, a heated leather steering wheel, and an eight-way power-adjustable passenger front seat, you get all that with the Encore GX Essence. Essence models can also be equipped with a premium Bose audio system, a panoramic roof, a powered tailgate with hands-free operation, wireless smartphone charging and a surround-view camera system, as long as you’re prepared to pay a little extra for them.
The 2021 Buick Encore and Encore GX may be SUVs with a small footprint, but there’s no denying they’re also big on features, style and capability. They’re also an attractive proposition for budget-conscious buyers thanks to being great value for money and cheap to run with EPA fuel economy ratings as good as 30mpg in the city, 32mpg on the highway and 31mpg combined for 1.3-liter front-drive GX models.
